FREE SHOULDER ASSESSMENT

STEP TWO

STEP TWO:

HAVE YOU GOT A LOOSE, UNSTABLE SHOULDER?

When doing these assessments, please do NOT take your shoulder into positions that you don't trust it in or result in a clunking sensation. If at any point you don't trust your shoulder or you feel a sense of clunking, stop the assessment immediately and book a call.

HOW TO DO THE ASSESSMENT

In the first assessment, we are looking at instability around the front of the shoulder. Lying on the floor, take your elbow out to shoulder height and at a right angle, and slowly lower your arm down to the ground (towards your head).

If this assessment is negative (so you don't experience any symptoms and your shoulder is free to rotate to your limit) use a yoga block, place it under your elbow and repeat the movement.

The next assessment is designed to explore instability around the back of the shoulder. In a standing position, bend your elbow to 90 degrees. Lift your shoulder out to the side, take it in and then slowly with your other arm rotate your shoulder down. If this is not causing any of your symptoms, turn and face the rig or a wall and place your elbow onto it. Lean slightly through the elbow and repeat the movement of internal rotation.

YOUR NEXT BEST STEP

If you have a history of shoulder dislocation, subluxations or apprehension (lack of trustworthiness) and you have not had surgery to address this, please book a call so we can help guide you to the next best step.

If you’re not sure on this one, we’d encourage you to err on the side of caution and book in some time to talk to us.

HOWEVER...

If you do not have any feelings of instability or lack of trustworthiness in these assessments, continue to step three.
