FREE SHOULDER ASSESSMENT

STEP ONE

STEP ONE:

HAVE YOU GOT A PAINFUL STIFF SHOULDER?

HOW TO DO THE ASSESSMENT

Perform active range of movement in shoulder external rotation.

Using a broom handle or similar, perform passive range of movement in external rotation.

Now, perform active range of movement in abduction (arm moving up by the side of the body).

Finally, perform passive range of movement in abduction using the broom handle.

YOUR NEXT BEST STEP

Have you got a reduction in both the active and passive range of motion in either the shoulder external rotation or shoulder abduction?

If so, you might have a stiff painful shoulder.

Our recommendation with stiff shoulders is that you contact your GP or physiotherapist. These conditions can require an individualised medical approach and face-to-face assessment.

You can find out more about the painful stiff shoulder on our blog.

 HOWEVER...

If you can passively (assisted) move the shoulder through the same or more range of motion than you can actively move it, continue to the next stage of the assessment.
